Climate change is one of the paramount environmental and economic challenges for our generation and the actions we take today will shape the health, safety, economy, and environment of tomorrow. King County is committed to taking bold action on climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preparing for climate change impacts, and supporting resilience in communities disproportionately impacted by climate change.

King County’s 2020 Strategic Climate Action Plan – the guiding policy document for King County actions and investments on climate - was proposed by Executive Constantine in August 2020 and unanimously adopted by the King County Council in May 2021.

Climate Equity Community Task Force (CECTF)
The CECTF is a group of leaders who represent frontline communities across King County. The task force guided community-driven actions in the new climate equity section of the 2020 Strategic Climate Action Plan.
Forest Carbon Program
This program is tackling climate change by offering local companies the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions by keeping forests intact here in the region.
Zero-emission buses
King County Metro is transitioning to an entirely zero-emissions vehicle fleet powered by renewable energy by 2040.
Climate Change GIS Open Data Portal
King County has created a beta-version Climate GIS Open Data portal for GIS professionals to support the use of spatial analysis in preparing for and adapting to the impacts of climate change. Users can use the site to view or download GIS data for the Puget Sound basin.
The Climate Action Toolkit, developed in partnership with the King County Cities Climate Collaboration (K4C), advances King County’s leadership in equitable climate solutions, charting policies and investments that cities can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, spur the growth of a clean energy economy, and protect the natural environment. The recommendations of the Toolkit, framed in the updated K4C Joint Commitments and King County’s 2020 Strategic Climate Action Plan, will help guide cities that are just getting started in climate planning, as well as those seeking to move farther and faster.
